On a normal, busy morning in the Waffle House in La Marque, Texas, one waitress encountered a chain of events that would change her life. Little did she know that she was secretly recorded by a nearby restaurant patron who noticed something that she didn't realize anyone else would see, let alone share online and become a viral sensation.
A regular customer of the Waffle House in La Marque, Texas, Laura Wolf had spent many of her breakfasts here and has got to know the serving staff during a coffee. Most days, nothing particularly noteworthy would happen at the restaurant.
But the morning of March 3, 2018, was unusual. When Laura ate her breakfast, as usual, she noticed something strange, so she quickly put down her eating utensils and took her phone out of her purse. Then, she snapped several photos. The waitress on the other end of the photos didn't realize that she was being secretly recorded in the act.
Before Laura secretly recorded the waitress, she had already noticed something a little bit different about the restaurant. The Waffle House had always been a popular breakfast joint in La Marque with just over 16,000 citizens. But this morning, it seemed like a madhouse, with almost everyone in the small city being here.
Countless patrons swarmed into the restaurant, all trying to get in and out for a quick breakfast. Each server was running around, trying to keep up with the rush in the morning. But that particular morning was not just extraordinary because it was busy.
One of the waitresses Laura noticed running around was Evoni Williams, known by her coworkers as "Nini." Laura recognized her from her other visits to the restaurant. Nini had been a waitress at the Waffle House for a few years now, she was known as a hard worker at the restaurant.
There was a good reason for the 18-year-old waitress' working so hard. She was saving every penny she earned in the hope to attend a local college. Evoni had big dreams, but she had saved up only a small amount of money so far. However, soon, all of that saved money would not really matter.
Evoni came to work at the Waffle House that morning hoping to take home a few tips. When she saw numerous patrons lining up to be seated, Evoni was pleased that it would be a good day for making money. She got to work quickly, taking orders by running from booth to booth.
While she was making a good amount of tips, Evoni was indeed a little bit exhausted. That day, the Waffle House was a little bit understaffed, every server trying their best to make up for it. Evoni was non-stop moving since the moment she started working. Then, as she was delivering breakfasts to customers, she noticed something in her peripheral vision.
Evoni noticed one specific customer out of the corner of her eye, and it didn't strike her as unusual initially. She had seen him at the restaurant several times, at least once a week. He was definitely a regular, and his name was Adrien. But the 78-year-old was more known by his colorful nickname, Mr. Karaoke.
Adrien entered the Waffle House around 10:00 a.m. that day, about the usual time he came to have breakfast. Though the old man was always in good spirits, it's also commonly known that he had been struggling with some health issues and carried an oxygen tank alongside. While everything seemed normal, Evoni was about to do something remarkable.
As Adrien entered the Waffle House, Evoni carried on her busy day of work. She was balancing plates, running from table to table, taking orders and trying to stay on top of the breakfast rush. Just as she was feeling like she was getting a handle on everything, Adrien got her attention.
Evoni noticed that Adrien was trying to flag her down, so she stopped behind the bar stools, where he was sitting. Adrien then started whispering something to her in case no one else around them could hear exactly what he was saying. As Evoni had no idea she was being secretly recorded, she did something she never knew would be caught on camera.
Sitting in a booth directly across from Adrien and Evoni, Laura could not hear what was being said in the hushed exchange, but she had an instinct. She tried to lean closer to hear a bit of what the two were saying to each other.
Laura observed as the man with the oxygen tank looked a little embarrassed as he spoke to the waitress. At that moment, Laura knew she was watching something interesting unfold. So she shuffled through her bag, took out her phone, pointed it at the two of them, and pressed record.
At the same time as Laura secretly recorded Evoni, the waitress was trying to understand exactly what Adrien was saying. On this particularly busy morning, the sounds of Waffle House customers, clanging utensils, and a bustling kitchen were drowning out Adrien's soft whisper.
As Evoni tried to listen and lean in closer, it's not like her job had stopped. Just behind her from the kitchen, one of the line cooks started yelling her name and trying to get her attention. But Evoni responded as if she was not there, and was intent on listening to the Waffle House regular, Adrien.
At first Evoni thought that Adrien might have just been one of those patrons who were unhappy with his food and wanted to send it back to the kitchen. She listened to the man demanding her attention and nodded with a smile as he whispered. Then, Adrien passed Evoni his breakfast plate.
Evoni took Adrien's plate of eggs, home fries, toast, and ham, and slid it closer in her direction. However, instead of taking the plate back into the kitchen to correct whatever had gone wrong or giving the man a new menu to pick another dish, Evoni kept the plate in front of him. Soon, she passed the plate right back to Adrien as he looked on.
At this moment, Evoni was focused solely on Adrien at the bar. It seemed that everyone else in the jam-packed Waffle House on that busy morning had disappeared. But that definitely wasn't the case.
There were still patrons waiting for their breakfasts; there were still hot meals waiting to be served, and there was still one patron looking on and watching Evoni's entire exchange with Adrien. Laura secretly recorded the entire exchange between Evoni and Adrien. However, that was not the only recording of Evoni conducted that day.
While Laura was watching the exchange happening in real time, she secretly recorded it. In fact, there was another video of Evoni's behavior that day. The restaurant's security camera caught Evoni walking by Adrien, leaning in to hear what he had to say, ignoring the cooks behind her, and taking Adrien's plate.
The CCTV video also recorded Evoni leaning from behind the bar counter as if nothing had happened. Luckily for the Waffle House's management, the video camera suspended from the ceiling gave them a bird's eye view of exactly what happened that day. Soon, thousands of people on the Internet would get to see exactly what had transpired between Evoni and Adrien.
Once Evoni brought back Adrien's plate across the bar and started to continue her day of serving customers, Laura was left speechless. She had secretly recorded the event and a few pictures on her phone documented what she had just witnessed, but she had no idea what to do with the evidence.
After seeing what she had just witnessed, Laura knew that she needed to share the pictures with someone. At the Waffle House, there were so many people, but she did not know whom she could send the photos to. Eventually, Laura decided to share a post about it online. She wrote out a Facebook post and pressed send. Laura had no idea what she had done and how much it would affect Evoni's life.
The entire event unfolded before Laura's eyes began with a question from Adrien. Amid the hustle and bustle of the morning rush, Adrien was feeling a little self-conscious. He was having health problems that began with a bout of pneumonia and found himself unable to do some of his usual day-to-day activities.
"I can hold a fork fine and dandy," Adrien told ABC News. "But to cut it looks like I'm going to stab somebody," he said, laughing. In a need of cutting his ham, he decided to get a waitress's attention for a little help. That is when Adrien found Evoni and catalyzed the life-changing interaction.
Evoni would later explain what happened at the Waffle House that day to news cameras. "He was like, 'My hands are not functioning too well,'" Evoni said. At that moment, she leaned in and tried to make out exactly what Adrien was saying.
"He needed me to cut his food for him, so I did," Evoni told ABC News. She took his plate, cut Adrien's ham into small, bite sized pieces, and delivered it back to him. Then, she went about her day as if nothing had happened, because to her, this act was just a part of the job. Little did she know that Laura had secretly recorded the interaction and that it was already causing a stir online.
Laura believed her best bet to get the word out about what she had seen at the Waffle House was to post it on Facebook. Laura wrote, "I don't know her name but I heard this elderly man tell her his hands don't work too good."
Laura continued, "He was also on oxygen and struggling to breathe. Without hesitation, she took his plate and began cutting up his ham. This may seem small but to him, I'm sure it was huge. I'm thankful to have seen this act of kindness and caring at the start of my day while everything in this world seems so negative." It didn't take long, though, before her post gained an outpouring of reactions.
As soon as Laura put her cell phone down, it began to light up. Throughout her breakfast, notifications on her phone would keep coming. The feedback was nonstop. Some people gave comments on the post praising Evoni, while others shared it to their own pages and spread the word about this kind waitress.
Laura ended her Facebook post with a message, reading "If we could all be like this waitress and take time to offer a lending hand..." She had no idea that she had just unknowingly lent a hand to the waitress, and it would soon result in developments she'd never expected for her seemingly simple act of kindness.
Just a few days after Laura had shared the photo of what she had witnessed at the Waffle House, the post had gone viral. It had quickly garnered more than 90,000 likes and 47,000 shares from thousands of people praising Evoni and using her act of kindness as a heartwarming moment for their followers.
"Somebody told me two days later that I was very popular because they saw me on Facebook," Adrien told a local ABC News affiliate. "They got a fancy picture of my suspenders in the back," he said, laughing. It seemed that everyone across the town, and even across the nation, had seen the viral photo. That's when a highly influential person got wind of the story and decided to do something about this special moment.
La Marque city in Texas had just about 16,000 residents, but it seemed everyone was only talking about Evoni. Words about her act of kindness that was secretly recorded made it all the way to the mayor's office. As soon as Mayor Bobby Hocking heard about the viral Facebook post based right in his town, he knew he had to meet this special waitress.
Evoni had known that the mayor was going to show up, and there were many cameras at the Waffle House that day to record the event. However, the mayor was not just going to the restaurant to see Evoni. He had much more planned to honor the Waffle House waitress.
With camera crews filling up the booths at the Waffle House and reporters swarming the restaurant, Evoni knew that she was being recorded and that her face would be all over the news. All were there to see mayor honor Evoni for her act of kindness. But none of them knew that there was much more to happen that day.
As the mayor stood behind the bar at the restaurant, just where Evoni stood as she had cut Adrien's ham, he announced that he had a special presentation to make. The mayor then announced that March 8th would be known as "Evoni 'Nini' Williams Day" in the town. Evoni had her own day, but the next gesture would leave her in tears.
The story of Evoni's kind act toward Adrien was making rounds on the Internet. Soon, another story about Evoni and her job as a waitress would also begin to circulate. As more and more people started to learn about Evoni, they also began to learn about what landed her at the Waffle House in the first place.
Word got out that Evoni was saving all of the money she was earning in order to attend college. So, some La Marque citizens decided to start a GoFundMe account online in hopes of helping Evoni raise money for her tuition. They had a goal of raising at least $16,000. Unsurprisingly, tons of people read about the college fund, including one very important person.
The GoFundMe account set up to help Evoni fulfill her dreams of going to college was starting to build traction. More and more people from La Marque in Texas and across the country were pitching in to help this selfless Waffle House waitress gain the funds to put herself through college.
Word of the fundraising effort spread about 30 miles away in Houston, Texas. Administrators and staff at Texas Southern University, just a 35-minute drive from the Waffle House, heard about the GoFundMe and wanted to help. "We wanted to reward Evoni's act of kindness," an administrator at the university said in an interview. And the college decided to do just that.
Tons of people had filled the Waffle House on March 8th as the mayor of La Marque presented Evoni with her very own day in her honor. Both Adrien and Laura were in the audience looking on as Evoni rejoiced over having a day named after her. But there was also someone else in the crowd that day.
It was the president of Texas State University, who wanted to meet Evoni in person. "Let her know that good deeds do not go unnoticed," the president later explained in a television interview. Ultimately, he got the opportunity to meet Evoni in person, and by the end of that meeting, there would not be a dry eye in the room.
Right after the mayor of the town awarded Evoni her own day, the president of Texas State University took his place behind the Waffle House bar to make another announcement. There, in front of Evoni's family, friends, the mayor, and the two people who helped push her to social media stardom, the president awarded her with something huge.
The president of Texas State University announced that the university would award Evoni with a $16,000 scholarship for their school. He even brought one of those signature gigantic checks to hand off to Evoni. Instantly, Evoni along with her mother and everyone else in the room started to cry. But how did Laura, who had made the viral post about Evoni, feel about the events that transpired?
As Evoni received her priceless scholarship, both Laura and Adrien looked on, teary eyed. Laura could have never expected just a few days prior, when she posted the video, that a simple social media post would change someone else's life like this.
"It was so busy in here, you know? And she actually took the time to stop and hear what he had to say instead of walking passed him. It just meant something to me," Laura said in an interview with local journalists. Adrien agreed, "it means a lot," he said. But inspite of all of the honors and rewards, Evoni did not feel the same way about her act of kindness.
Even after all of the social media attention, the praise, the day in her honor, and the college scholarship, Evoni still said she didn't think of herself as a special person. In her eyes, she was just doing something that anyone would do for people in need.
"I don't know, it was something I would do any other day," Evoni said to local news reporters. But for Laura and Adrien who witnessed the whole event and for everyone on the Internet, Evoni represented the beauty in stopping during busy, chaotic moments and taking the time to help a stranger out.
