It's a tradition that the first family will leave Washington D.C. when a US president retires from the White House. But the Obama family didn't abide by the tradition, and they bought a local new house for $8.1 million from Joe Lockhart, the former press secretary of Bill Clinton. The Obamas' new mansion was said to even shame the White House. Just have a look inside!
In an interview with host Ellen Degeneres, Michelle Obama said that they "live in the neighborhood, down the street from the White House." So the former first family is actually neighbors with Donald Trump. Besides, their new mansion is reportedly only a 3-minute walk from the house of Ivanka Trump. That sounds a little bit awkward, but Michele said she is ok with it.
In a talk with Oprah Winfrey, Michelle claimed that for the first time in 8 years, she was living in a normal house with a door and doorbell. She told Ellen Degeneres that the entire family is getting used to their new life, as well as their dogs, Bo and Sunny. None of them had ever heard a doorbell before!
Michelle explained that “Because [Barack] was being president when we had to move, so he didn't really have time to go house-hunting.” Clearly, the former first lady has great taste in house. Their new home has all the trappings of a classic Tudor abode, featuring a white-washed brick facade and a steeply pitched roof. Covering nearly 8,500 square feet, the house has 9 bedrooms, 8.5 bathrooms, and 3 fireplaces.
The kitchen features white cabinetry and what Zillow called "state-of-the-art stainless steel appliances." Michelle said that she'd "go downstairs and open the cabinet in my own kitchen - which you don't do in the White House - and I made myself toast. Cheese toast." She then brought the toast outside and sat alongside her dogs on the stoop. Now she can eventually enjoy the peaceful life she has always dreamed of.
The dining room features recessed lighting and a modern chandelier against a unique hardwood ceiling - a perfect place for family dinners. The wainscoted walls also offer another touch of formality to this elegant space.
The Obamas can also enjoy some fresh air in the yard. The dogs love playing in the yard, but it took some time to adjust as they’d never heard neighboring dogs before. "They're like, 'What's that?'" Michelle said of Bo and Sunny hearing barking for the first time.
Michelle once joked that Barack Obama was not happy with the house, saying “He got so shortchanged on this whole deal. He doesn't have enough closet space." However, the house has a dressing room with wall-to-wall closets and an island for clothes storage. Perhaps Michelle needs all the closets for her amazing wardrobe.
The house features two sitting rooms - one decorated with comfy furniture plus a fireplace with traditional white mantle; the other has floor-to-ceiling windows complete with French doors leading out to the backyard. Since the latter has a TV above the mantle, we can assume that’s where the former first couple watch all their shows.
Michelle Obama told Degeneres “Sasha has, like, this two-room suite. It's all decked out. She's got like a living room area and a bedroom - and she designed it.” Now we can see why Barack Obama is not happy.
Sasha may have the best room in the house, but her older sister is not so lucky. “She's got a room up in the attic somewhere, Malia," Michelle Obama told Ellen Degeneres on her show. "She's away at college. You don't waste rooms on college kids."
Barack and Michelle Obama have a private, elegant and understated bedroom - just like the one in the White House. The room features a wall of windows to allow in natural light, neutral bluish-gray walls and crown molding that exudes elegance, as well as thick draperies that provide privacy and block out any unwanted morning light.
Can a basement be exciting? Well, the Obamas have the basement of all basements. The lowest floor of the Kalorama mansion has a built-in bookcase that spans the entire length of one wall as well as another kitchen! The secondary kitchen is as well equipped as the one upstairs and even features a washer and dryer for laundry.
