The vet was in complete shock when she saw the expectant pit bull's ultrasound, as this pregnancy was truly unique. She had to rush to tell the owner what was going on...
Mariesa and her husband Chris lived a crazy enough life - they shared their home with 10 rescue dogs. What's crazier was that they wanted to adopt another dog. When they arrived at their local shelter, they found there were so many to choose from, all giving them their best "take-me-home" look. Suddenly, their eyes landed on a beautiful pit bull, and they knew they had found the one. However, something was revealed that made them doubt their choice.
Mariesa and Chris were soon told that the pit bull they had chosen was heavily pregnant. She should have given birth to her puppies, but she still hadn’t and nobody knew why. The couple felt this gentle mom-to-be needed a safe home to deliver her babies. However, there was more to this dog than met the eye.
The couple learned that this pit bull, named Storie, had belonged to a backyard breeder. However, the breeder abandoned her at the shelter after realizing it would be too much work to look after both Storie and her puppies. Poor Storie!
The moment the couple heard about Storie’s miserable experience, they knew they had to take her home and give her the love she needed, as well as a place to give birth. But the in the next moment, they realized that taking in Storie meant that they would very soon have far more than 11 dogs, and that was a lot more to take on than they’d be anticipating. They really didn’t know if they could handle so many dogs at home. Besides, they weren’t even sure how many were even coming. They didn't know what to do...
While the couple were discussing what they should do, Storie came to them and rested her head on Mariesa’s knee, looking at her with pleading eyes. It seemed like Storie knew what was happening. Of course, Mariesa knew what Storie wanted to do. To help her, Mariesa had to come up with a solution...
Actually, it was not even a question of whether they would take Storie home. The question was how they would do it. After much discussion, they came up with a brilliant idea that they thought would be best for everyone. They decided to become Storie’s foster parents. That would give them enough time to find a permanent home for her and her puppies.
Storie had finally got her chance to leave the shelter. To the couple’s surprise, she adjusted well to her new home and was getting along well with all the other dogs. The couple’s only concern at this point was the pregnancy. They needed to figure out why Sorie hadn’t delivered her babies yet. What was the problem?
The couple decided to turn to the Internet for answers. They searched for possible reasons that could be causing Storie to delay delivering her puppies, only to find more questions than answers. The fact that they couldn’t find out what was wrong made them worry even more, but they didn’t get discouraged and kept looking. Finally, they found something that could potentially help…
The couple found an article that explained shelter dogs often felt stress and were even experiencing a degree of trauma. Some of them would therefore refuse to give birth because they felt the environment wasn’t ideal for their puppies and they could be in danger. But was the delay dangerous to the mom and babies?
Having done a lot of research, the couple knew clearly that this situation could be detrimental and even life-threatening to both Storie and her puppies. That meant if they just waited around doing nothing, they may lose them all. The couple knew they had no choice but to rush Storie to the veterinary clinic. Nothing could have prepared them for what they would be told.
When the vet administered the ultrasound, she was shocked at what she saw. The vet checked the scan one more time and got the same result. This was not an ordinary pregnancy at all! Had she not seen it with her own eyes, she wouldn’t have believed it.
After the shock wore away, the vet had to explain to the couple what was going on inside their dog. As the vet showed them the ultrasound, she counted the outlines of the puppies with them, one, two, three… Most dogs can carry up to six puppies during pregnancy, but they found Storie was carrying double that amount! She had an unbelievable 12 puppies in her belly. No wonder she looked like she was ready to POP!
The couple could not believe their ears! But 12 puppies seemed a little too much for the mom’s small body. What did this mean for Storie? Would she and her puppies survive the pregnancy? What should Mariesa and Chris do to help her? The couple became more and more worried about Storie after learning of her unusual pregnancy.
The vet assured the couple that all the puppies were alive and healthy, despite Storie’s stress related delay in birthing. However, she couldn’t find out why Storie still hadn’t given birth. She told them to take Storie home and that all they could do was wait. However, if Storie didn’t give birth within the next 48 hours, they needed to bring her back for further examination.
Having read several articles explaining how trauma can affect a pregnant dog, the foster parents thought if Storie had her own space, she may feel safe and comfortable enough to give birth. In the corner of their room, the couple created a special haven for her that had a comfy pillow and some blankets. They then waited anxiously for the puppies to come.
Upon waking up the next morning, the couple made their way to see Storie. Before they could see her, they had already heard some funny noises. They ran to Storie, only to find out she had already given birth. They began to count carefully and excitedly. There were a total of 12! The couple almost burst into tears of joy. Neither of them had expected that she would give birth in the middle of the night all by herself with no assistance at all. What an absolute champion she was!
Finally, the couple knew why Storie had kept her puppies in her belly for so long. Storie’s motherly instincts had taken over while she was at the shelter. She knew the shelter was not the right place for her babies to be born, so she prevented the birth. After spending just one day at Mariesa and Chris’ home she felt loved and safe enough to finally give birth.
Storie was a great mom that took good care of her babies. Within two weeks, the puppies had opened their eyes, and they loved to playfully run around the yard. Unfortunately, just as the puppies were growing up, the time when they would have to separate from their mom was getting nearer.
Although Mariesa and Chris loved the puppies, they knew they could not keep them. Surprisingly, they found homes for each puppy. While it wasn’t easy to part with them, it was the right thing to do. But what would happen to their mom? She also deserved a loving home.
As you can imagine, Storie’s story took social media by storm. People loved the inspiring story and shared it far and wide. Then one man heard about Storie and immediately fell in love with her. He contacted the couple and asked to adopt her. Storie had finally found her forever home.
Thanks to Mariesa and Chris’ love, Storie got her happy ending. However, there are still so many animals at shelters that are waiting for people to care for them. According to the ASPCA, about 6.5 million companion animals go to U.S. animal shelters every year, of which about 3.3 million are dogs and the rest are cats. So, if you want to take home a dog or cat, please consider adopting one instead of buying one.
