A mom from Colorado adopted two babies months apart but noticed something bizarre about them. What she found out next turned out to be once in a blue moon occurrence. What exactly happened? Rean on to find out!
Birmingham, Alabama native Katie Page felt completely lost after divorcing her husband in her early 30s, because the perfect family life she had always dreamed of seemed unattainable. But every ending has the potential for a new beginning, and this was the case for Katie.
Katie decided to start over by relocating to Denver, Colorado. She took a new job there working as an integrated service manager for GE Johnson, a construction company. She even purchased a four-bedroom fixer-upper house and completed the renovations herself. Everything seemed to be going well, but she still felt unfulfilled and didn’t know where to start until one day...
One day, when she was hard at work, she received a letter from her local church about an upcoming forum that was focused on fostering kids in need. Katie was immediately drawn to the idea and went along. She didn’t expect this experience would lead to a decision that would totally change her life.
Katie aspired to become a foster mom despite being a single woman in a new environment. On Mother's Day in 2015, she filled out an application to the local foster agency. She was ready for a drastic life change, but what would happen was far beyond anything she had ever imagined.
Not long after her application was processed, Katie began receiving cases. The foster kids that came to her were not only those without parents but children who had suffered from trauma at a very young age. The process of helping them and nurturing them made her realize she wanted to adopt a child of her own.
Only two weeks after telling her caseworker she wanted to adopt a child of her own, Katie received a phone call about a four-day baby boy who had been abandoned by his mom at a nearby hospital. It wasn't just his young age that made the case urgent…
The poor baby didn't even have a name, and what's worse, he had unfortunately been exposed to drugs in the womb. Thankfully, after a careful examination, doctors found the infant wasn't showing signs of withdrawal. Would Katie help him?
Katie was currently fostering a 14-month infant, so taking care of another baby would easily drain her resources and energy. But the moment she heard the baby's story, Katie felt a connection that she couldn’t explain. "I want him," she told the caseworker. Within a day of receiving the call, Katie took the baby home.
Given that the baby didn't have a name yet, it was imperative to find one. Katie decided to call him Grayson, convinced that by God's grace, she now had a son. Little did she know that there was an aspect of Grayson's past that she was completely unaware of and that in time it would come back to her full force.
For the next 11 months, Grayson was growing up healthily, while care workers were trying to find his biological parents. They posted in the newspapers and searched the hospital where he was born. However, no one came looking. Part of Katie was relieved that Grayson might actually be hers forever. She realized he had earned a unique place in her heart and she decided to take things one giant leap forward.
In May 2017, Katie officially adopted Grayson. The cute baby finally got the loving home he deserved. However, Grayson was a little different from other babies - he needed her mom's full attention, as he struggled both developmentally and physically because of his drug exposure in the womb. Little did they know that their adventure was just beginning.
Just a month after Grayson's adoption, Katie received an emergency call. The caseworker at the fostering agency told her there was another baby, and this time a girl with the name Hannah, who had suffered the same misfortune as Grayson. She had also been abandoned at the same hospital, exposed to drugs in the womb, and was also four days old. Katie knew she must also do something to help this poor baby.
Katie had just taken on the huge responsibility of a lifetime with Grayson, but her gut told her to take in Hannah. Hours later, the baby girl was brought to her house. Although Katie already knew the details of Hannah, she noticed an additional peculiar coincidence, one that would lead to the greatest shock of her life.
Katie found the birth mom's first name on Hannah's baby bracelet was the same as Grayson's birth mom. While looking over Hannah and Grayson's discharge papers, she realized the two moms' birthdates were only one day apart. Additionally, the two babies had gone through the same misfortune. Katie couldn't help but think they might have the same birth mom. But how could this be possible?
"Grayson is half African American with beautiful darker skin and dark curly hair. Baby Girl has a pale white skin tone with straight red-blonde hair," Katie wrote on her blog. Though they didn't look anything alike, Katie had a hunch that she could not shake.
Working on her hunch, Katie told the caseworker that Grayson and Hannah might have been born to the same mom, but the worker said the idea was ludicrous. However, Katie felt all the coincidences were far too striking to be ignored. She took the initiative and finally found an important clue.
Through months of searching, she managed to track down and meet with Hannah's biological mom. She was stunned to find that the woman had a striking resemblance to Grayson. What's more, during the conversation, the woman admitted that prior to the baby girl, she had given birth to a baby boy, whom she had abandoned without any record. Katie now felt closer to the truth than ever.
Soon new evidence came in. The caseworker discovered that the last name left by Grayson’s birth mom matched the same last name of a relative of Hannah’s. Katie and the caseworker were now fully convinced that the children were siblings, but they needed scientific proof. Katie took the children to a DNA test, and the results were exactly what she thought. She couldn't believe that she had ended up with siblings randomly.
"What if the baby girl had gone to another family?" Katie asked on her blog. "We would have never found her or Grayson's mother. The connection would have never been made! I could not believe the miracle that had just happened."
Katie loved the siblings so much that she could not bear to see them apart again. She was ready to officially introduce Hannah into their family. On December 28, 2018, after an emotional hearing, Hannah became Katie’s daughter by law. When Katie began her journey of fostering children, she never imagined such an unbelievable adoption story would happen to her.
“They were meant to find each other, that’s pretty clear. I think God intended that from the beginning. If they weren’t related, Hannah would not have stayed with our family. She would have been placed with other relatives.” Katie said in an interview with People Magazine.
