In the middle of Napa County in Northern California lies Lake Berryessa. It’s just an ordinary and little-known lake, until one local happened to spot a weird, mysterious hole in its water that captured the attention of millions of people. How could a body of water possibly have a hole in it? And what was it really? These questions would lead to some utterly startling revelations.
Evan Kilkus, a Drone enthusiast and YouTube personality, worked at a water sports rental shop at Lake Berryessa. One day, when he was taking his drone out for a casual spin, flying it over the tranquil lake’s surface, he suddenly noticed something absolutely unbelievable in one of the pictures taken by his drone.
The picture showed that there appeared to be a huge hole in the water of Lake Berryessa. How could that be? Evan couldn’t believe his eyes and did a double take, but the hole was indeed there! It defied all logic. How could a body of water have a hole in it?
In no time, Evan checked all the other pictures and discovered that there was indeed a massive, mysterious hole rupturing the surface of Lake Berryessa and that it was sucking the lake’s water in at tremendous speed. It seemed there was a huge drain in the bottom of the lake and someone had abruptly pulled the cover. Eager to learn more about this incredible sight, Evan was determined to investigate further.
He decided to fly the drone closer back over Lake Berryessa in order to find a few more visual clues, ones which might better explain the source of the hole. But as the drone came right up to the edge of the vortex, something downright bizarre happened.
As his drone got closer to the hole’s edge, the screen inexplicably began to malfunction. At the side of the lake, Evan noticed the controls were flashing as something was causing them to glitch. He had never seen his device do this before, so he piloted the drone back to shore as fast as possible. What if it died and was swallowed up? Was the incident caused by the mysterious hole?
After a thorough inspection, Evan found that the drone’s battery was low. Nevertheless, he suspected that the problem was far more than that. From what he had observed so far, he assumed that whatever unseen power was creating the hole was trying to draw in his drone. Luckily, he managed to salvage it. But when he checked to see if the drone had brought back any new clues, he was utterly stunned.
Thankfully, the drone was able to take a few close-up pictures before the escape. But Evan still couldn’t figure out what was going on inside the hole. Although he was a thrill-seeker, there was no way that he would risk going near the hole by swimming there himself. So, he decided to send the drone out once more.
Before the second photographic mission, Evan wanted to do some research in hopes of digging up something about Lake Berryessa. Had anybody else noticed this hole before? He scoured the Internet for any additional information about this peculiar sight and even interviewed people in the neighborhood, but he came up empty handed. He eventually realized he would have to uncover the mystery himself.
Now he had to rely on his drone. This time, Evan tried to fly it as close to Lake Berryessa as possible. From the photos his aerial device brought back, he worked out that the baffling wonder was about 72 feet in diameter. However, he was not satisfied with the tiny finding. There were still many questions confusing him, like how deep the hole was and how it had come into being.
Evan was not the only one who had come upon the wonder. More and more people driving on the road along the shore of Lake Berryessa began to notice the incredible sight. There were also others who flocked to the side of Lake Berryessa after hearing the news of a hole in its water. After all, few things were more eye-catching than spying a massive hole in the middle of a lake. Word about the unique phenomenon was spreading, and it finally reached Kevin King, an operations manager for the country’s water facilities.
King decided to go on a field visit first. “I went there the other day and there were about 15 drones flying around and people taking videos,” King said, “It’s really dramatic to watch.” Even he was impressed by the stunning vortex’s magic. But it was this man who would soon help reveal the cause of this wild phenomenon to Evan and all the other curious passersby.
California is notorious for its dry climate and shortage of water. Lake Berryessa is the seventh largest man-made lake in California. It was designed in conjunction with Napa County’s Monticello Dam, flanked by the scenic Vaca Mountains. Behind the scenes, as Evan would soon discover, the engineers working on the lake were responsible for the fascinating truth behind the weird vortex.
The 526 billion gallons of water held in Monticello Dam was not only used for drinking and irrigation, but also for providing power for more than 600,000 people in the surrounding area. But how were all these matters connected to the mysterious hole?
To prevent the lake from flooding the road around it when its water level rose drastically, the architects added a spillway in the lake’s design. Usually, a spillway is set into the walls of a dam, but this case was unique. Given that how narrow Lake Berryessa was, a normal dam wall fitted with a spillway would be too big. Besides, it would cost too much to bore into the surrounding mountainside. After much discussion, the engineers came up with an unorthodox solution.
To make sure that the water wouldn’t overflow and that it would continuously flow into nearby Putah Creek to help the local infrastructure function, the engineers decided to create a special funnel between Lake Berryessa and Putah Creek. There was a good reason why people didn’t recognize it, as the funnel now looks totally different from how it had done in the past. But what did it look like before?
California has been suffering a record drought during the past decade, which meant that Lake Berryessa’s water levels were often much lower than usual. The stone “bell-mouth” entrance to the funnel above the dam was often seen exposed. But then the climate changed radically with torrential rains, thereby causing the bizarre sight in the Lake Berryessa.
If the water of Lake Berryessa reaches over 440 feet above sea level, it swamps the funnel, plummeting more than 2,000 feet before draining into Putah Creek. It’s kind of like what happens when a drain is pulled out of a bathtub. In this case, the funnel would look like a giant hole measuring 75 feet across and 28 feet at its base, and that was exactly what Evan had stumbled upon. But how dangerous could such a giant vortex be? The answer may be totally beyond your expectations.
Although the hole looks lethal, experts said that it was actually not too much of a threat as long as you didn’t swim too close to it. The pull was not as strong as it seemed and most swimmers should be strong enough to overcome it. Still, there are buoys and guard barriers surrounding the lake to ward people off.
As for Evan himself, he had never expected that he would receive so much attention shortly after sharing the footage of the bizarre hole on YouTube. His YouTube channel went from having only several thousand views to over 14 million! Evan (along with the lake) had become an absolute Internet sensation.
